Returning to El Salvador in 2018 felt like coming full circle. More than 15 years had passed since my first visit, and in that time, I'd wandered through different continents, chasing the thrill of new experiences and the comfort of familiar places. This time, my visit was not just a return to a beloved country but also a reconnection with a teenage passion: surfing. It was a refreshing dive back into an activity that had long anchored my life, giving it meaning and a drive to move forward.

Surfing: An Emotional High

Fifteen years of growth, change, and adventure stood between me and my last surf in El Salvador. When I caught my first wave again, it was more than just a thrill; it was an emotional high. Surfing is not just a sport but a form of living meditation for me. The moment I gripped that board and felt the saltwater spray on my face, I knew this was where I belonged. El Salvador's coastline has some of the best surfing spots in the world, from Punta Roca to El Zonte, making it a paradise for any surf enthusiast.

Friendships Forged in History

One of the most profound aspects of my visit was reconnecting with friends from my first trip. Many were just slightly older than me and had lived through the country's civil war, which cast a long, traumatic shadow over El Salvador. The stories they shared were heart-wrenching tales of friends, brothers, and neighbors who, overnight, found themselves on opposite sides of a brutal conflict. These narratives aren't just part of the country's history but also integral to the emotional fabric of my connection with El Salvador.

A Changed Landscape

The El Salvador I returned to in 2018 was different in many ways. The ghosts of its past seemed to have faded, and the country felt much safer and more welcoming to visitors. During my trip, I toured the country's natural beauties, from its mesmerizing beaches to lush green forests. The transformation was evident, not just in the infrastructure but also in the vibrant spirit of the people who seemed ready to move forward, leaving the dark days behind.

Moving Forward

This journey back to El Salvador was more than just travel; it was a homecoming of sorts. It offered me a chance to revisit old passions and rekindle friendships that time had tested but could not break. Surfing reignited my appreciation for the simple joys in life, while the stories of struggle and survival I heard reminded me of the resilience of the human spirit. As I look ahead, I carry with me the warmth, bravery, and undying spirit of El Salvador, feeling forever grateful for the many ways it has enriched my life.
